How to Solve Drainage Issues

How it Started...

This family in Ooltewah, TN had drainage problems. There was standing water on the side of their house where they had a walkway with flat stones that led from their front yard to their backyard. The standing water was attracting mosquitos and becoming a bit of a swamp. They realized they'd need to learn how to solve drainage issues for their yard.

They called Ray Lawns to see how they could help. Brian and his team assessed the situation and recommended they install a French drain.

Unexpected Weather

The day they got started, it was pouring rain. Brian had a truckload of sod and knew it had to be installed within twenty-four hours or the sod would be ruined.

So they rolled up their sleeves and got to work in the downpour.

First they dug a trench and laid down a special pipe that has holes in the top. This pipe allows the water to fill the pipe where it is then carried down the length of the pipe where it is deposited away from their home to a drainage area using a pop-up emitter to release the water. In this case, it was near the bottom of their driveway.

Building up the Ground

To prevent proper drainage of the area, Brian and his crew built up the ground 4 to 5 inches next to the French drain so the rainwater would run down into the French drain instead of sitting next to it, creating a new swamp.

Filling in the Trench

After putting in the pipe, the team at Ray Lawns filled in the trench around the pipe with gravel. It’s important to use gravel because the water can easily filter through it to the pipe below.

They placed the original stepping stones back in the same area, only this time they were on top of the gravel to create a walkway.

Finally it was time to lay sod. They got it down, and it ended up being perfect because the new lawn was heavily watered by the rain during installation.

The French Drain in Action

They were also fortunate enough to see the French drain in action, and sure enough, the water successfully ran down the built up area that was now covered in sod. It traveled into the French drain, and when Brian walked to the end of the driveway where the water came out, he could see it pouring out through his pop-up emitter and down the driveway to the street, safely away from their house and yard.

The French drain was highly successful, and Ray Lawn had another happy customer with an eye-catching path through their side yard and the swamp was a thing of the past.
